Steinway & Sons

Steinway & Sons a name recognized worldwide as one of the best piano makers.

This piano company was established in 1853 in Germany. Still, today, the production of its instruments takes place in their two piano factories, one of which is in Germany and the other of which is in the United States.

Consistency is key for this company, and this brand has become synonymous with producing German pianos people can rely on. Such is their reliability that international pianists can sit down at any of their instruments and know that it will feel the same as any other they have played on at other concert venues.

This is a company that works hard and continues to make improvements to its instruments. They continue to ensure that the look, touch, and tone of their pianos are second to none.

Through the use of its pioneering handcrafting methods, this is a company that ensures that the quality of its instruments is hard to beat.

Through the combination of their use of state-of-the-art technology and old-world craftsmanship, Steinway & Sons pianos possess some of the widest range of tonal colors. They also produce instruments with a very responsive touch. So you will find playing such instruments a joy at all times.

Bluthner

Yet another great manufacturer from Leipzig in Germany. Like Steinway & Sons, this company began making pianos in 1853. It continues to be managed and run by the Blutner family.

By 1900 this piano brand had become the largest maker of such instruments in Germany. It was able to produce over 5,000 pianos each year.

Ever since its conception, this brand has continued to earn a reputation for building and maintaining high-quality instruments.

Unfortunately, in 1943 the factory where their pianos were made was destroyed during an air raid. By 1945 the brand had been rebuilt.

Today, along with their premium instruments, you have the opportunity to be able to own one of theirs as they offer a more affordable range.

Bechstein

1853 seems to be a time in Germany when piano production was centered. Just like the previous two brands, Bechstein was formed this year in Berlin.

The first piano built by Carl Bechstein was suitable for all types of pianists to play with good sound quality.

The event that helped this company to gain a footing in the market was the opening of its store in London in 1885. The brand’s popularity grew even more when Queen Victoria chose to purchase one of Bechstein’s gilded grand pianos.

Over the next few years, it became the largest showroom for Bechstein pianos in Europe. The company went on to build the Bechstein Hall now known as Wigmore Hall.

For well over 130 years, the production of Bechstein pianos continued to take place in Berlin. In 1992, however, piano production moved to its new factory in Seifhennersdorf.

Since moving to its new factory, the company has chosen to invest more than $19 million in new designs and technology. This has helped this piano brand to remain at the forefront of piano design that is available in various price ranges.

Mason & Hamlin

Just a year after the formation of the three companies above, two gentlemen from Massachusetts came together to form the above American piano company.

Henry Mason was a classical pianist, while Emmons Hamlin had become known for being a great inventor.

From the outset, it was their attention to detail, along with their passion, and choosing only to produce a limited number of instruments that helped to make them very popular quickly.

It wasn’t until 1881 that they decided to dedicate time and effort to making an American piano. Although they were considered the best in the world, they were also the most expensive American piano to produce.

Unfortunately, after the Second World War Mason & Hamlin seemed to lose their way. But then in 1996, this American piano company was purchased by PianoDisc. This is an American piano company that started to see the glory they enjoyed earlier in return as they once again became a leading maker of these instruments.

Even today Mason & Hamlin still make some of the most costly pianos, but they continue to place their focus on producing high-quality instruments.

Mason & Hamlin have a team of 70 skilled craftsmen who are able to produce 300 Grand and 50 upright pianos each year. Throughout the production process, each one of the instruments Mason & Hamlin produces is inspected no fewer than twelve times.

Stuart & Sons

This is the newest of all the brands to produce pianos that we’ve included in our list. The company from New South Wales, Australia began making these instruments in 1990.

This is a company that produces only a few pianos each year. In fact, since its formation, this company has only built 55 pianos.

The reason why they have only produced such a small number is that they use rare beautiful wood in the manufacturing process.

As well as looking amazing, these instruments perform well. The actual keyboards comprise either 97 or 102 keys. They also claim that theirs can reach a much higher pitch in comparison to pianos made by other brands.

Fazioli

Another relative newcomer to the world of piano making, as this company was formed back in 1981. Since its relatively recent inception, this company became known as one of the world’s best piano makers.

Paolo Fazioli, who set up this brand, is not only a concert pianist but is also the son of a world-renowned cabinet maker. It is these two things that provide him with the ideal background to produce a unique instrument.

It is his dedication to his art that has helped him achieve his goal of wanting to make the best quality piano that money can buy. As a result, his instruments aren’t cheap, and he has chosen only to produce grand and concert grand pianos.

Even in such a short period of time, this young piano maker has already made his mark by producing some of the most exquisite instruments now available.
